OK, How do you get the name Bill out of William and the name Chuck out of Charles.?

I have always wondered about the above. Further more we chance to add “ie” to the end of Bill or Chuck, but I guess that is an age thing. Is there a history there or is it just a regional thing? In the South what we call nicknames are very typical. Maybe in other regions too but I am a Southern girl born.

And Jack out of James, and Kit out of Christopher, and Colin out of Nicholas….

There are lots of these things. My guess is that in other languages (perhaps the originals for the names) the subtle changes in pronunciation makes the nicknames closer to the original. E.g., Nicholas – which is Klaus (klouse, or claws – depending on the pronunciation), and Nicky, and Calli, or Colli, or Colin, or….

Sean, Ian, Yvan, Ivan, Jan, Yan, and John are all basically the same name, but with different pronunciations (and spellings). They have all come into English separately, but they are all “John.”
